People keep asking me ‘So what’s next?’ I’m never really sure how to respond. I’ve never been one to make long term plans and my one attempt at the ‘where-I-want-to-be-in-5-years-plan’ did not forsee a change of direction that threw those plans out the window.
Usually my answer involves something along the lines of ‘I’ll wait and see what happens’. But even waiting is fraught with difficulty. What if a different decision should have been made or a different direction taken? What if an opportunity has been missed by being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or even the right place at the wrong time?
Holding out for the next big thing in a world of ‘what if’ can often mean missing out on the here and now. As I was recently reminded it’s not what we are waiting for but how we wait that is sometimes most important.
So, what’s next? Perhaps learning to ‘wait well’ is enough for now.
I hear you – I also get it a lot, and think it a lot and am tempted to be thinking about the next step as soon as I begin something new. Maybe there’s a lot to be said for waiting and enjoying the now….
